Marin Mūnchies' founder, Katja Reitemeyer, grew up in Hamburg, Germany and began making her own cakes, cookies, and chocolatey desserts as a child. For years, she indulged in eating whatever she wanted. Her love of chocolate was so intense that she combined it with everything, even breakfast eggs. It wasn’t until the early 2000's in the midst of a thriving technology career when, after moving from Europe to the United States, she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and a variety of other severe food allergies. Devastated, she was advised that among many culinary loves, desserts and chocolate were simply off the menu due to the multitude of seemingly unavoidable ingredients.

Refusing to give in, she began experimenting with new recipes, and in the process, re-kindled her passion for making sweets – especially her first true love: chocolate. Only this time, she would have to create the chocolate herself. Tasting her first Bean-to-Bar chocolate in 2012 she found inspiration, from the kind of beans she sourced, to the sugar she used, to the avoidance of most major food allergens in her production process. Her chocolate would be as “pure” as she could make it, and free of the harmful ingredients that dilute so many other chocolates.

What started with simple and homemade recipes soon led to a career choice of leaving the old behind and following her passion into a larger Bean-to-Bar business endeavor. From that humble beginning, Marin Mūnchies was born.
