Country and Region

The Kokoa Kamili Cooperative is situated in the Kilombero Valley bordering the Udzungwa Mountains, and surrounded by highly fertile land with good rainfall.

Owners Brian LoBue and Simran Bindra have backgrounds in international development throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. The Kokoa Kamili Cooperative is centered around three main ideas: Tanzanian cocoa has the potential to be among the best in the world, cocoa has the power to drastically improve small shareholder farmers’ lives, and cocoa has great implications for the economic development of the region and community.

The cooperative currently works with approximately 1,500 small shareholder farmers, most of whom farm between 0.5-2 acres of cocoa. Kokoa Kamili pays a premium for their ‘wet’ cocoa, and conducts its own fermentation and drying, all of which produces consistently higher quality cocoa, reduces the farmers’ workloads, and provides greater and more immediate compensation to the farmers for their work.

Social Pillars

Historically, farmers in the Kilombero Valley received some of the lowest prices for cocoa in the country because a single buyer dominated the area and had the power to set the price for cocoa. In Kokoa Kamili’s first year alone, Kilombero farmers received the highest prices in Tanzania for their cocoa.
